Watts introduction
Watts, California is a community in South Los Angeles. It is in an area that was once used for grazing and cattle ranching by Mexicans and then Americans. One ranch owner was Charles H. Watts who was a businessman from Pasadena. He wanted to increase development in the area of his ranch so in 1902 he donated 10 acres to the Pacific Electric Railway to build a station. It was built in 1904 and called Watts Station. It was also known as Watts Junction as the Salt Lake Railroad also stopped there. In only a year the population jumped from about 65 people in 1904 to 1,651 in 1905. The city of Watts was established by vote of the local residents in May, 1907. Initially, the city council was unable to raise taxes, and so they promoted liquor sales and at least three saloons were built which were taxed to fund infrastructure. By 1910 the population was over 2,500 people and the city had public schools, several churches, a fire department, a weekly newspaper and a new City Hall. On April 2, 1926 Watts was consolidated into Los Angeles with a population of about 23,000 people.
